  Central to the plans will be something far less grabby but something that is far more essential – an overhaul of the club’s neglected infrastructure which could include a revamp and upgrading of the existing training ground at Darsley Park or, more excitingly, a new world-class facility being built elsewhere. Investment in that area alone could be around £50million.

  Part of that will be a focus on Newcastle’s academy, what it is producing and how players have slipped through the net or been allowed to leave. Newcastle will position itself as the club of the north, tapping into the fact that there is no other Premier League club within a 100-mile radius at present.

  Newcastle has a huge geographic catchment area and should attract all the best local players. Money will not just be spent buying players but there will be an expectation of it being recouped also in trading them in the way that Chelsea have pioneered.
