SouperPoll :: Rossi's Illegal Pass: Role Reversal
What do you think would have happened if the roles had been reversed and Nick Hayden passed Casey Stoner in a corner with a waving yellow flag being displayed at the Australian GP?
He'd have been given a pass because he didn't actually see the yellow flag and because Stoner later re-passed him, albeit while they were racing.
1174 votes (22.1%)
Hayden would not have made it two more corners without ''race direction'' penalizing him 30 seconds for the ''clearly illegal rule infraction''. He'd have been lucky to finish in the top ten.

Ryder Notes: All Change!
by julian ryder, in the air above australia

MotoGP got its first wet flag-to-flag race yesterday. Eight laps in, and after a start that was delayed to give the weather time to make up its mind whether or not it wanted to rain, with proper rain coming down most of the field came into pit lane. Under the new rules, they hopped off their slick-shod bikes and onto their spare bikes, which were on rain tires. Despite Phillip Island having the shortest and narrowest pit lane of anywhere MotoGP races there were no incidents--although Nicky nearly collected Loris Capirossi as he pulled out on his rain bike.
Nicky was one of the few who got lucky. Shinya Nakano, who was going so good he looked like he'd win the previous race as well, didn't feel comfortable on his second bike, and neither did Dani Pedrosa or Valentino Rossi. The difference there was that Rossi still managed to race at the front while Pedrosa's aquaphobia returned and he slid back through the field. Hayden, as usual, had to baby the clutch of the line but unlike in Malaysia he got to the first corner almost last while his team-mate went the other way from tenth on the grid to fifth at Turn One.
Come the rain, the man who risked and gained most was Chris Vermeulen. He rode hard on his in-lap and again on the out lap--'At Turn 2 I put my knee on the ground and hoped the tires'd grip.' They did. In fact while it was raining hard the Bridgestone boys had fun. Sete Gibernau pulled out an impressive lead only to be overhauled by Melandri, who'd been totally anonymous on Friday and Saturday.
Once it dried out significantly on some parts of the track the Michelins came into their own and the Bridgestones started sliding. The French rubber is built for a patchy track, the Japanese for a completely wet one. By the flag poor Gibernau was riding on tires with bald strips four inches wide on either side and as a result he was reeled in by the dice everyone was watching--Hayden and Rossi. Going into the last lap they were fourth and fifth. They caught Gibernau out of the last corner with Pedrosa (about to be lapped!) in the mix, and The Doctor craftily got Gibernau between himself and Hayden to take five points out of Nicky and go second in the Championship. Vermeulen was only a second up the road, another lap and he'd have been as teed-off as as Sete. Marco duly took his win by coming out of the last, fourth gear, corner with the bike sideways, his rear Michelin smoking and his left hand off the bars and waving to the crowd. The snapper who got a pic of that one will be buying a new car next week.
So Rossi, the fastest man on track in the dry, yet again managed to turn an unpromising situation to his advantage.
Of the men who started the race with genuine hopes of the title, Rossi scored most points. Capirossi and especially Pedrosa suffered, while Melandri now believes 'the window is open a little bit.'
After the race it emerged that Race Direction were looking at an incident said to involve Rossi overtaking Stoner under a yellow flag. It happened towards the end of the race when Hayden was shadowing Rossi. Nicky says he saw the flag, Stoner doesn't remember seeing anything and Rossi obviously didn't see it. Most people wearing a Honda or HRC shirt regarded it as an open-and-shut case; Race Direction didn't see it that way. Honda are still seething, but Nicky refuses to complain. He must have thought that Rossi would be demoted in the order and it did take him a lap or two to get past Stoner. Actually, Nicky got right up behind Stoner, hoping Rossi would realize his mistake and make room for Casey to go back through and intending to take advantage himself. Nicky's view is simple: 'Rossi beat me on the track, he didn't overtake me under a yellow flag.' He still leads the Championship, but it's Rossi behind him now. Nicky is far more concerned about why he still hasn't got a clutch that will let him do a race start than he is about any yellow flag.

Ryder Notes: Godzilla
by julian ryder, on the ground at motegi
Saturday, September 23, 2006
Loris Capirossi dominated again at Motegi as he put in a lap on qualifiers that reduced Valentino Rossi to near shock. He came into his pit for his last qualifier, looked at the timing screens and said ''****!''
Loris had put in a pole lap seven-tenths quicker than last year—when he also happened to be on pole. Vale's first qualifying run had been aborted when Hopkins fell in front of him, so The Doc had one go at getting what he regards as a vital front row start. He did it, and Marco Melandri got what is only his second front row of the year to make it Italians all over the front row.
Vale is very happy with his race set up, and more than a little relieved that, after the travails of previous years at Motegi, his M1 worked well from Friday morning.
But as Rossi is the first to point out, he is not the only one with good race pace. Capirossi is the stand-out, but a whole herd of others, including Nicky Hayden, have strung together impressive runs on race tyres.
The big question is who can get to the first corner first. The lap starts with three big braking efforts and this place is not as easy to pass on. Rossi says there's no way the race'll be as much fun as Sepang. On Nicky's side is the new clutch which he says is start proof but not so good in the race. On the subject of his new two-year contract with HRC, he says it hasn't taken any weight off his shoulders. He agrees that there were two other solid possibilities for him, and that he even discussed with Valentino Rossi the prospect of them sharing a pit again. But once HRC management came to Nicky on Thursday and he was able to ensure he would keep his race engineer Pete Benson and get the crew he wanted he was happy. Money wasn't much of a sticking point. 'You know what you get at Honda, that makes you sleep good at nights.' In other words, he knows the 800 is going to be competitive.
But back in the present he isn't so happy with his set-up: 'There's nowhere it feels great.' Nicky is another one who knows only too well the value of a good start tomorrow.
Meanwhile the fallout from the Aussie yellow flag incident continues. The GP Commission met today on the instigation of FIM President Zerbi after he received a letter from Suguru Kanazawa, President of HRC, asking for action over race Direction's handling of the incident. The outcome of that meeting has yet to be made public. Rossi fielded questions on the subject with his usual aplomb. Asked about Kanazawa's letter he replied that it was 'normal', and that if Nicky had been the subject of the row then Mr Furusawa of Yamaha would have written a similar letter. On a more serious note he pointed out that the yellow flag regs are a 'weak point of the rules.' They say when you see a yellow you should 'slow down and prepare to stop', which precisely nobody does. As it has long been the precedent that if a rider is unconscious or in a dangerous position then the red flag goes out the yellow flag has become devalued. Most people would agree with that, it remains to be seen what action the authorities deem appropriate.
Valentino spends most of his time in Japan having presents thrust upon him by well-wishers. Just to show you that Japan is indeed as weird as you thought it was, this year those gifts have include a three-foot high robot Godzilla.

VALENTINO ROSSI (2nd; +5.088)
''I'm really happy with this second position today. It wasn't a great battle like in Sepang, but my rhythm was really good and my bike worked very well. We had a few problems in warm-up this morning and, like always, my mechanics, the Yamaha engineers and Michelin did a great job to make some last-minute changes to our race set-up. At the start my M1 was a little bit hard to ride but slowly I found my rhythm and then bit by bit I started to come closer to Marco. Once I passed him I started pushing to try to reach Loris and made the fastest lap, but once he realised I was coming closer he opened the throttle again and he was just too fast for me to catch. My bike worked brilliantly since Friday morning and I want to thank everyone for all their hard work, it seems that when everything is working for us then it's hard for the others! 20 points is a great result for me at this track, which isn't one of my favourites, and now we're only 12 points behind in the championship. We have two races left and if we can continue in this way then it's possible!''
Hayden said, ''Well that's another fifth place which isn't great obviously. Lap one was pretty wild and luckily in the first couple of corners I made up a lot of positions because my start was a bit of a disaster - that was the worst part of the race for me. Luckily that first lap turned out as good as it did because otherwise the result could have been much worse. I tried to come through the pack but it's hard - you're coming past fast guys and in this class it's really tough. Luckily we've got a couple of days here to test now.''

HONDA WINS CONSTRUCTORS' AND TEAMS' TITLES
Loris Capirossi, Ducati Marlboro Team, winner, 4th overall, 205 points
''I think that was a pretty amazing race. It all started on Friday when my team immediately found a good setting and Bridgestone came here with many good new tyres. I was able to find a good rhythm in practice and we were very fast in warm-up, so our target was to get a great start and just go. I got the start, but Marco tried to overtake me on the first lap. I said to myself it's better he doesn't come past because I didn't know if his pace was as fast as mine. After six or seven laps I started to take a small advantage, then after half-distance my pitboard told me Valentino was coming. At that moment I was going a little bit slow and when I saw Valentino coming very quick I had to go faster again. My pace was very good, 47s all race. This victory is very important to us and I don't think the championship will be over until the last race. To win here in Japan is a fantastic thing for us to do, and also for Bridgestone. My thanks to all my team and to all our sponsors.''...egy fecske nem csinál nyarat, viszont egy hülye százat csinál...

Honda Debuts 800cc V-4 MotoGP Bike
in first public test new machine is only half-second slower than 990
by staff
Monday, September 25, 2006
This just in from HRC:
Honda reveal new V4 800cc MotoGP machine at Motegi test
Repsol Honda team riders Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa returned to action at the Motegi circuit for an afternoon of testing following yesterday's Grand Prix of Japan. Hayden testing newly developed parts for his 'New Generation' RC211V while Pedrosa gave the V4 800cc MotoGP machine its first public viewing. . Spaniard Pedrosa put in 30-laps of the 4.801km Japanese circuit to give the HRC race engineers valuable data as they prepare the machine to comply with the 800cc MotoGP regulations scheduled for the 2007 season.
The initial shake-down test was positive and after a few visits to the pits for adjustments to various areas of machine set up the youngster lapped the multi-purpose race track at 1m 48.210s - a time just over half a second slower than his best lap time set in Sundays Japanese grand prix.
MotoGP world championship leader Hayden concentrated his efforts on improving his race starts with new clutch parts brought to the test by HRC engineers in a bid to help the American. Once he was satisfied with performance Hayden set about improving the corner speed stability of his RC211V.
Hayden will now turn his attention to the V4 800cc Honda and hopes the forecast rain showers hold off long enough for him to evaluate the performance of the V4 as the test team prepare the machine for next test following the Grand Prix of Valencia in late October.
Team Roberts arrived at Motegi with the first of the New Generation' frames for the KR. The new machine was built in time for Friday morning practice. However, testing during a race weekend is very rarely successful and team rider Kenny Roberts Jnr struggled to find the necessary balance required for the super grippy surface at the Japanese circuit.
Kenny improved the handling characteristics of the machine throughout practice for the main event and took ninth place in the race. Today with five hours track time the team the new chassis performed up to design expectations and their day ended with Kenny reeling off a series off fast laps under his best race lap time, the best at 1m 47.57s.
Honda rider lap times and quotes.
Nicky Hayden, Repsol Honda:1m 47.755s - 54 laps.
''Overall it was a pretty good day - I was able to run 1m 47 laps easier than I had been over the weekend so even though the bike hadn't changed I feel like I was riding a bit better. Today we mostly tested some different parts for the clutch, I did some practice starts and tried to find something that worked into the corners and can still handle the starts. We don't want to use anything that's too risky because the last thing we can afford right now is a DNF. I didn't try the 800 because I've got plenty of work to do with the current bike and I don't need to take on too many new projects right now. It looked really cool though and I'm looking forward to getting a crack on the 800 tomorrow.''
Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda: 1m 48.210s - 30 laps. ''The first feeling is that the new bike runs well and this is very important - it works normally and everything feels fine. The engine character feels a little different and this is to be expected but the package feels quite similar to the RC211V. Some things about the bike fees smaller and the rear seat is much shorter which makes the whole bike look more compact. The bike has some characteristics which are a little more like a 250cc but it's still a MotoGP bike. The lap time today is quite good for a first test - though it's too early to say whether it will be faster than the 990. The cornering speeds feel very similar to the RCV - though the corner speed at Motegi is very low because there are many hairpins, so it's very difficult to say definitely whether it'll be quicker. This was a good first test though.''
Kenny Roberts Jnr, KR211V: 1m 47.57s -63 laps. ''That's the best the bike has ever been, it's the most rider friendly tractable bike the team have built for me. With this chassis we have been able to use a new suspension set up that has given the bike a better balance. We have also changed the power curve and some things on the brakes, the changes have helped give the machine the kind of rear wheel grip we need on circuits like Motegi and Sepang.''

Egyszer talán megéljük azt is, de most Rossira koncentrálok. Idén kezdtem megszeretni, különösen Biaggi távozása után. No meg mindezt a küszködésének is köszönheti.
